Eastern Orthodoxy

Eastern Orthodoxy is one of the three major branches of Christianity characterised by its rich tradition, liturgical worship, and strong emphasis on apostolic succession. It believes that it is the direct continuation of the early Christian church, tracing its roots to the early church in the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, having broken communion with the Church of Rome in the Great Schism of 1054. Eastern Orthodoxy encompasses a family of autocephalous churches, the most prominent being the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and the Russian Orthodox Church. Eastern Orthodox theology centres on the Holy Trinity and the mystery of salvation, with a particular emphasis on theosis, or the process of becoming one with God. Iconography, elaborate liturgical services, and the use of the Byzantine Rite are key features of its worship. Eastern Orthodoxy has a profound historical and cultural legacy in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Balkans, and Russia, and it plays a significant role in the spiritual lives of millions of adherents worldwide.
