Macedonian Orthodox Church

The Macedonian Orthodox Church, officially known as the Macedonian Orthodox Church - Ohrid Archbishopric, is the autocephalous Eastern Orthodox Church in North Macedonia, and the successor to the Archbishopric of Ohrid established in the 11th century. It played a crucial role in preserving the Macedonian identity and Orthodox Christian faith during the Ottoman rule. The church became autonomous from the Serbian Orthodox Church in 1967, and it gained full autocephaly in 1991, though this has a subject of ongoing contention with other Orthodox churches.
