Ecumenical
Patriarchate of Constantinople
One
of the oldest institutions in the Eastern Orthodox Christian
Church, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople
is recognised honorarily as first among the Orthodox Churches
due to its place as the church of the capital of the Byzantine
Empire, or 'New Rome'. The church played a pivotal role
in early ecumenical councils, shaping Christian doctrine.
However, it also experienced tensions and conflicts, including
the Great Schism of 1054, which led to the formal separation
of the Eastern Orthodox Church from the Roman Catholic
Church. Throughout its history, the Patriarchate has remained
a symbol of Orthodox Christianity and a significant spiritual
and cultural centre. Today, it plays a crucial role in
fostering dialogue among various Orthodox churches and
representing the Orthodox faith in interfaith and international
contexts. It also oversees the administration of the Greek
Orthodox community in Turkey and has a global diaspora
that follows its spiritual guidance.
