Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria
The
Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria was established
in one of the earliest centres of Christianity, with its
origins dating back to the 1st century and the ministry
of Saint Mark the Evangelist. It is a historic Eastern
Orthodox jurisdiction with a geographic scope that encompasses
Orthodox Christian communities across the African continent.
Prior to the Council of Chalcedon of 451, Christians in
Egypt were united in a single Patriarchate of Alexandria,
however controversy surrounding Chalcedon’s Christological
teaching led to a split, and the formation of the breakaway
Coptic Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria. This division
persists to this day, with the two Patriarchates coexisting
in Egypt. The Greek Patriarchate of Alexandria has endured
numerous challenges throughout its history, and continues
to be a significant presence in the Orthodox Christian
world, particularly in Africa, where it maintains a diverse
and vibrant community.
