Orthodox Church of Greece
The Greek Orthodox Church history dates back to the early
days of Christianity. It was deeply influenced by the
teachings of the Apostles, including Saint Paul and Saint
John, and it played a vital role in the development and spread
of early Christian theology. The First Council of Nicaea
in 325 was a significant event in the church's history.
The Greek Orthodox Church maintained a close connection
to the Byzantine Empire, and the Byzantine Emperor was
often involved in ecclesiastical affairs. The Great Schism
in 1054 led to the separation of the Eastern Orthodox
Church, including the Greek Orthodox Church, from the
Roman Catholic Church. During the late 19th and early
20th centuries, the church was closely associated with
the struggle for Greek independence, and it played a key
role in preserving Greek cultural identity during centuries
of Ottoman rule. Today, it remains a central institution
in the lives of many Greeks, both in Greece and among
the Greek diaspora, and continues to be a significant
presence in the global Orthodox Christian world.
