Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem

The Patriarchate of Jerusalem traces its roots to the original Christian community in Jerusalem. The Council of Chalcedon raised the Church of Jerusalem to the rank of Patriarchate in 451, and allocated it three ecclesiastical provinces and a large number of dioceses, previously controlled by the Patriarchate of Antioch. It has always been a small church, with its current territory confined to Israel, Jordan, and the Sinai Peninsula. The Patriarchate has endured centuries of political and religious turmoil, surviving under various rulers, including Byzantine, Arab, Crusader, and Ottoman control. It became heavily dependent on the Ecumenical Patriarchate during the Ottoman period. Despite numerous challenges, it has played a vital role in preserving and promoting Orthodox Christianity in the region, and is the main custodian of the Christian holy places in Jerusalem.
