Georgian Orthodox Church
The history of the Georgian Orthodox Church spans over
1,500 years. Georgia's conversion to Christianity is traditionally
attributed to Saint Nino in the early 4th century. The
church gained autocephaly from the Church of Antioch in
the 5th century, making it one of the earliest autocephalous
Orthodox churches. Throughout its history, the church
has played a pivotal role in the spiritual and cultural
life of Georgia, often intertwined with the country's
political fortunes. It faced periods of foreign rule and
suppression, including under the Mongols and the Soviet
Union, but continued to preserve its distinct liturgical
traditions, religious art, and a strong sense of national
identity. Today, it remains a vital institution in Georgia,
with a significant role in shaping the nation's cultural
and spiritual character.
