Romanian Orthodox Church
The Romanian Orthodox Church is an autocephalous Eastern
Orthodox church, with over 16 million members. It is one
of the oldest Christian churches in the world, with its
roots dating back to the 2nd century. The church played
an important role in the development of Romanian culture
and identity. It was a major centre of learning and scholarship
during the Middle Ages, and it helped to preserve the
Romanian language and culture during periods of foreign
occupation. It also played a leading role in the Romanian
Revolution of 1989.
