Orthodox Church of Ukraine

The history of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine can be traced back to the 10th century, when the Metropolitanate of Kyiv was established under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. This church served as the religious centre of Kyivan Rus', a powerful medieval state that encompassed much of what is now Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus. However, over the centuries, the Church in Ukraine faced periods of division and subjugation, particularly under the influence of the Russian Orthodox Church. The desire for independence from Moscow control gained momentum in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, culminating in January 2019 when the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople granted it autocephaly. At the same time, two other independent churches, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church – Kyiv Patriarchate, and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, merged with the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, making the new formation the largest Orthodox church in the country. Metropolitan Epiphanius of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine declared that these two former independent churches were always other historical names of the one single and current Orthodox Church of Ukraine. The church's autocephaly is not recognised by the Russian Orthodox Church.
