Patriarchs of Jerusalem

During the Ottoman period, the Patriarchate of Jerusalem was reliant in the Ecumenical Patriarchate, which consecrated new patriarchs for the Jerusalem church, and often selected them. Since 1534, all the patriarchs have been ethnic Greek, whilst the faithful have been Arab, and this has become a source of contention in recent times. Additionally, political factors have occasionally influenced the selection and actions of the patriarch. Today, the patriarch continues to play an imoprtant role in preserving the Orthodox Christian faith in the region for its small number of followers, and facilitating the ongoing religious and cultural heritage of the Holy Land.
