| St
James (5) the Just
(–AD 62) Other names: the Lord's Brother Biographical Bishop of Jerusalem A martyr, James was one of the four brothers, half-brothers, or cousins of Jesus. After his conversion and retreat into the wilderness, he went to Jerusalem with Peter and James. He was later thrown from the top of the Temple wall to his death. This James is traditionally identified with James (2) and James (3), but there is insufficient evidence to support that they were the same figure. He is also traditionally identified with the James who authored the Epistle of James, but it might have been the work of other authors instead. Jude (5) called himself his brother. The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem claim him as their first patriarch from c. 50 to 62. Place of death: Jerusalem |
