Patriarchs of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople

The Patriarch of Constantinople is the spiritual leader and highest-ranking bishop of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and is elected by the Holy Synod of the Patriarchate. Although he is considered 'first among equals' within the Eastern Orthodox hierarchy, it is a position of honour without overarching authority over other Orthodox Churches. His role includes overseeing the spiritual and administrative affairs of the Church, promoting Orthodox unity, and representing the Orthodox Church to the wider world.
