William Elmes (fl. 1797–1816)

Little is known about William Elmes beyond the evidence offered by his extant work, which places him among the active British caricaturists of the early nineteenth century. Between 1811 and 1816, he produced a number of satirical prints for Thomas Tegg, whose publishing house was central to the commercial success of graphic satire during this period. Elmes is also believed to have practised as a stipple engraver, producing reproductive prints in addition to his original compositions.
