The Cossack Extinguisher
Hand-coloured etching, 34.8 x 25.2 cm, by
William Elmes, 1813
Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris

A colossal Cossack is shown poised to extinguish Napoleon Bonaparte, who appears diminutive and cowering, with his hat being used as a literal extinguisher. The caricature reflects British enthusiasm for the Russian advance against Napoleon during the latter stages of the Napoleonic Wars, using exaggeration and ridicule to diminish the French Emperor's stature and ambitions. Through grotesque contrast and theatrical imagery, the print conveys the decline of French influence in favour of Russian ascendancy.
