St Martha of Bethany

Biographical

Martha was the sister of Mary and Lazarus. The two sisters and the brother formed that honoured household in Bethany whom Jesus loved and with whom he often sojourned. The facts recorded of the two sisters bring out in strong contrast the active solicitude of Martha to serve Jesus with the best she could give, and the quiet earnestness of Mary to sit with Jesus as a listener and learner. Both sisters revealed to Jesus a love which he thoroughly recognised and fully returned.
