St Lazarus of Bethany
(1st century)

Biographical

Lazarus was an inhabitant of Bethany, and brother of Mary and Martha. He was honoured with the friendship of Jesus, by whom he was raised from the dead after he had been four days in the tomb. All that we know of him is derived from the Gospel of John, in which the notices are exceedingly scanty, but from which we may infer that he was, younger than the two sisters, and that the wealth and social position of the family were above the average. His sickness and death, and resurrection at the word of Christ, are minutely related in the eleventh chapter of John's Gospel.
