| Edgar
Linton
(1762–1801)
Biographical
Edgar was born before September in 1762 to Mr
and Mrs Linton.
Serious, polished and cultured, he marries Catherine
Earnshaw at Thrushcross Grange
in the spring or early summer of 1783.
He truly loves Catherine, indulging her and making her happy, despite
her continuing obsession with his rival, Heathcliff.
After her death, he retreats from the world in grief, and as his own health
is failing, he is troubled over the fate of his daughter by Catherine,
also named Catherine.
He sends for his lawyer, Mr
Green, to amend his will to stop Heathcliff from inheriting
the Grange, but Mr Green delays his arrival deliberately, betraying Edgar
in favour of Heathcliff.
Edgar dies on the 5th of September 1801,
with his daughter by his side.
Heathcliff soon becomes master of Thrushcross Grange.
