Sclafani |

| Of obscure origins, the Sclafani family was said to be of Germanic origin, descended from a knight, Aldizzone de Esclafan, who served Charlemagne and was rewarded with castles in Lombardy. The family arrived in Sicily with Giovanni Sclafani in the 12th century. The name of the town of Sclafani is said to be derived from the Greek god of medicine, Asclepius, after an Asclepian sanctuary in his honour was built at a site in the area where hot springs were used.
