The Pyramids of Egypt
Engraving, by Philips Galle, after Maarten van Heemskerck, 1572
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam
The Pyramids of Giza, particularly the Great Pyramid, are the only
wonder remaining from the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, chosen
around 2,300 years ago by Greek travellers. These early chroniclers
were astounded by the pyramids' massive scale, estimated to take a
staggering 27 million work-days to build, and their enigmatic purpose
as tombs for pharaohs. The pyramids' precise alignment with celestial
bodies, millions of meticulously carved stones, and enduring presence
for millennia cemented their place as a wonder, a distinction unmatched
by any other structure on the original list.
