| St
Jude (6)
(1st century)
Other names: Thaddeus,
Judas,
Lebbeus
Biographical
Jude is mentioned as one of the twelve apostles only by Luke. Jude was
the son of James (4),
and a fisherman by trade.
He was called Judas by Luke, and Thaddeus by Mark and Matthew. All four
Gospels refer to him as 'Judas, not Iscariot'.
Early Christian tradition made Jude the son of
James (2), and related to Jesus. Early chronicles had
him martyred in Persia as he was preaching the Gospel, but those accounts
are unreliable. Catholic tradition identifies him with
Judas (5),
the author of the Epistle of Jude.
He is the patron saint of desperate situations; forgotten,
hopeless, lost and impossible causes; hospital workers; hospitals.
