Anton Rubinstein

Russian pianist, composer, conductor, and teacher of Jewish extraction. A teacher of Tchaikovsky,[E6T] he toured extensively and gave recitals. His style was influenced by Schubert and Mendelssohn, and he played with extraordinary technique and emotion. He is best known for his Ocean and Dramatic symphonies; his songs also highly esteemed.[H46]
He was a co-founder of the St Petersburg Conservatory, and its director in 1862-67 and 1887. Nikolai Rubinstein was his brother.[E6T]
