Biographical

A vecino of Torrelaguna, Juan drew up his will together with his wife on 17 September 1565. His nickname stems from his living 'next to the wall of the said town of Torrelaguna'. His father’s name is unknown, and there is no documentary evidence available linking Juan to the principal Quirós line of Asturias. A supposed earlier Juan Bernardo de Quirós was presented as a member of that line (as a son of Juan Bernaldo de Quirós and Beatriz Cabeza de Vaca), from whom the Bernaldo de Quirós family of Torrelaguna claimed descent. His purported will, dated 1478, is thought to have been copied from the will of our Juan Bernaldo de Quirós in order to reinforce this alleged connection and support the family’s pursuit of various dignities. It contains several errors and similarities, including an identical list of the children named in the will of our Juan Bernaldo de Quirós, and is now considered to be a forgery.
