Bernaldo de Quirós
Señor de Quirós (–1476) Biographical Señor de la casa Quirós 1446–76† Señor de Villoria 1446–76† Merino Mayor of the Asturias Royal Guard Juan was in the service of King Enrique IV of Castile. During the disturbances that arose in the city of Oviedo, he held and defended it until, by royal order, he surrendered it to the Count of Luna, as recorded in the deed of surrender executed in that city on 10 January 1450. With the authorisation of the King, granted at Segovia on 28 January 1474, he founded an entailed estate (mayorazgo) comprising various properties, as evidenced by the deed executed at the fortified house in the village of Mieres on 18 April of the same year. Earlier, on 24 February 1471, he executed in Oviedo an endowment of ten fanegas of escanda (spelt) in favour of the Guardian and Monastery of San Francisco of Oviedo, subject to the obligation that certain Masses be celebrated. In 1474, perhaps already aware that he was suffering from leprosy, the disease from which he would die in 1476, Juan established the entail of Quirós, which included jurisdiction over the lordship of Villoria in Laviana, castles and fortresses in Quirós and Lena, ecclesiastical patronage rights, tolls, charters, rights, obligations, and notarial offices in the councils of Quirós, Mieres, Lena, Laviana, Caso, and Grado, as well as the House and Tower of the Quirós family in the city of Oviedo. He died of leprosy. His epitaph reads: |
