Portrait of Antonio Navagero
Oil on canvas, 115 x 90 cm, by
Giovanni Battista Moroni, 1565
Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan

An example of Moroni’s civic portraiture, characteristically precise and unadorned. Here, Antonio Navagero, Podestà of Bergamo, is portrayed at the age of thirty, wearing the ceremonial dress of his office: a crimson doublet and hose beneath a black overgown lined with lynx. His gaze meets that of the viewer directly, his expression open and composed, suggesting both authority and affability. His hand rests on a column inscribed with Cum Bergomi praeturam sustineret M.D.LXV ('While he was holding the office of praetor in Bergamo'), which confirms the subject’s identity.
