His gaze meets that of the viewer directly, his expression open and composed, suggesting both authority and affability. His hand rests on a column inscribed with Cum Bergomi praeturam sustineret M.D.LXV ('While he was holding the office of praetor in Bergamo'), which confirms the subject’s identity.
