An example of Moroni’s
civic portraiture, characteristically precise and unadorned. Here,
Antonio Navagero, Podestà of Bergamo, is portrayed at the age of
thirty, wearing the ceremonial dress of his office: a crimson
doublet and hose beneath a black overgown lined with lynx. His gaze
meets that of the viewer directly, his expression open and composed,
suggesting both authority and affability. His hand rests on a column
inscribed with Cum Bergomi praeturam sustineret M.D.LXV
('While he was holding the office of praetor in Bergamo'), which
confirms the subject’s identity.
