Antonio Navagero
(1532–87)

Biography

Podestà of Bergamo 1565

Amid a period of intense social and religious turmoil in Bergamo, Antonio Navagero was appointed to oversee the city in 1565. The situation was dire, with Fra Girolamo Finucci accusing Bishop Vittore Soranzo of heresy, while the ongoing feud between the Brembati and Albani families further fuelled unrest. Navagero’s appointment came at a time when the city was torn apart by internal conflict. His family’s long-standing diplomatic legacy played a crucial role in his selection, as they had a history of providing the Venetian Republic with esteemed diplomats, magistrates, and politicians. The Republic’s decision to entrust Navagero with the responsibility of restoring order was a response to the urgent need for experienced leadership.

Son of Francesco Navagero and Dandola Michiel.
