Adolf Schiele with his son Egon
Ferrotype, 8.6 x 6.1 cm, anonymous, c. 1893
Leopold Museum, Vienna

Adolf Schiele, station master in Tulln, was a central figure in the lives of his children, including his son Egon, who would later become a leading artist of Austrian Expressionism. In this image, the young Egon, about three years old, sits on his father’s lap, dressed in a sailor’s suit and cap, a style fashionable for children in the 19th century. Adolf, elegantly dressed in a hat, jacket, and vest, supports his son with one hand, while holding a walking cane and a cigar in the other. A broad ring on his right index finger catches the light faintly, completing the portrait of a man who left a lasting impression on his family before his death.
