The Schiele family
gathered for this photograph, likely taken in Tulln, with Adolf and
Maria posing alongside their children Egon, Melanie, and Elvira.
While Melanie looks directly at the camera, the others have their
gazes turned away. The calm captured in this image soon gave way to
sorrow and change. In 1893, Elvira, the eldest, died of meningitis
at the age of ten. Ten months later, Gertrude was born—the youngest
addition to the Schiele family.
