Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Chalk, ink, and wash on paper laid on card, 13.8 diameter, by Augustin de Saint-Aubin, 1778 Location unknown |

| A fine portrait, traditionally identified as Mozart, presents a profile view of a young man with a powdered wig tied at the back, dressed in an elegant coat with a high collar and a white cravat. Delicate shading and subtle contrast bring out the sitter’s refined features with a sense of depth. An inscription on the reverse, likely in an early nineteenth-century French hand, reads: 'Portrait of Mozart made during his stay in Paris at the time of his mother’s death'. The detached nineteenth-century card backing bears additional inscriptions in blue crayon and ink, including 'Portrait of Mozart made during his stay in Paris at the time of his mother’s death in 1778 by Augustin de Saint Aubin. Messina 1878. General-Consul Dr. Felix Bamberg.' Bamberg owned the portrait until after 1894. |
