The presentation of the young Mozart to Mme de Pompadour, 1763
Coloured lithograph, anonymous, after Vicente García de Paredes, 19th century
Location unknown

During their European tour, young Mozart visited Versailles with his father Leopold and sister Nannerl, and in mid-December they were granted a private audience with Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour. According to the story, Mozart, who had been warmly received by Empress Maria Theresa, was offended when Pompadour refused to let him kiss her, explaining that she only kissed the king. Leopold admired her beauty but found her proud, and the rigid formality of the French court left the family with a mixed impression of the visit.
