1d 'Chalon Head' Van Diemen's Land stamp

A hand-cancelled one penny Van Diemen's Land stamp bearing the 'Chalon Head' of Queen Victoria. First issued in 1855, the series included the 1d carmine (red), 2d green and 4d blue. The design was based on the portrait by Alfred Edward Chalon. The stamps were still in circulation even after the island was renamed Tasmania in 1856.
