George III
Oil on canvas, 163.2 x 137.3 cm, by
Johann Joseph Zoffany, 1771
Royal Collection Trust

Zoffany presents the monarch in a moment of poised introspection, dressed in the scarlet uniform of a British general, which emphasises his role as both king and commander. Although he is composed and dressed formally, his posture is relaxed. He wears the riband and star of the Order of the Garter, and on his left leg is the garter itself. Despite his position, King George III preferred simplicity, modesty, and an unostentatious way of life, and in the visual arts was less drawn to grandeur than some of his predecessors.
