The State Carriage and Royal Escort
Illustration from the from the Procession of the Coronation of Queen Victoria, 28 June 1838
Published by Robert Tyas

The Procession of the Coronation of Queen Victoria, 28 June 1838 was produced to celebrate and document the splendour of the occasion of Queen Victoria's coronation for a wide public audience. In this particular section, the focus is on the moment the Queen's State Carriage passes through a grand thoroughfare, accompanied by full ceremonial escort and watched by immense crowds lining the route and filling the surrounding architecture. To the left rides the Captain General of the Royal Archers, distinguished in ceremonial attire and representing the historic link between the Crown and Scotland. At the centre, the richly ornamented State Carriage, drawn by a team of white horses, bears Queen Victoria herself—just visible within—framed by gilt sculpture and escorted by attendants. To the right, members of the Yeomen of the Guard march in red and gold as part of the royal bodyguard, while mounted guards flank the procession.
