Napoleon I
Coloured stipple engraving print, by J. Duthé, after
Jean-Baptiste Vérité, after 1809
Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris

Stipple engraving with a rather sparse stipple technique, created between 1809 and 1840, with the frame engraved using a burin. The coloured proof is derived from a portrait of Bonaparte as First Consul, engraved by Vérité. Napoleon is shown as a bust, his head turned to the right, wearing a blue general’s uniform of the Army of Italy, to which braids have been added. The portrait is oval and accompanied by an inscription on a rectangular tablet reading: 'Napoleon I, Emperor of the French and King of Italy, born in Ajaccio on 15 August 1769, consecrated and crowned Emperor on 2 December 1804 and King on 26 May 1805'.
