A careful arrangement of
line and restrained colour, with Napoleon—drawn in subdued
monochrome—set against more vividly outlined equestrian figures on
either side. Toulouse-Lautrec makes use of lithographic technique
with subtle gradations and limited use of hue, allowing contour and
gesture to carry the image. The stylisation of horses and riders
combines caricatural observation with a certain formal elegance that
characterises the artist’s later graphic work.
