Napoleon
Crayon, brush, and spatter lithograph, 59.3 × 46 cm, by
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, 1895
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City

A careful arrangement of line and restrained colour, with Napoleon—drawn in subdued monochrome—set against more vividly outlined equestrian figures on either side. Toulouse-Lautrec makes use of lithographic technique with subtle gradations and limited use of hue, allowing contour and gesture to carry the image. The stylisation of horses and riders combines caricatural observation with a certain formal elegance that characterises the artist’s later graphic work.
