Despite numerous battle scenes and historical moments captured in
Vernet's brushstrokes of Napoleon, his work as a portrait artist remained
relatively unknown. This particular painting, grand in scale and concept,
stands apart from his usual repertoire. However, pinning down its
exact origin remains a mystery. Another version, reportedly gifted
by Napoleon himself, likely hails from the years 1805–1810.
While this signed canvas is presumed the original, a similar timeframe
isn't implausible. Clues within the painting are scarce. The Emperor's
heroic pose hints at Vernet's iconic Battle of Marengo, but
without a specific event depicted. Though adorned with the prestigious
Legion of Honour badge and sash, the notion of his beloved 'Marengo'
being the grey steed depicted here is unfounded. The last known owner
of this painting was Wildenstein & Co. Inc., New York.
