The Popes

The title of 'pope' was used formerly from the 5th century for the head of the Roman Catholic Church, the successor of St Peter. In the early centuries of Christianity, the pope was simply the bishop of Rome, and had no special authority over other bishops. However, over time, the popes came to be seen as the supreme authority in the Church, and their powers were gradually expanded. The Vatican's Annuario Pontificio lists the additional title of the pope, which include Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Jesus Christ, Successor of the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, Patriarch of the West, Primate of Italy, Metropolitan Archbishop of the Province of Rome, Sovereign of the State of Vatican City, Servant of the Servants of God.
