The Annunciation
Oil on panel, 16 x 60 cm, attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, or Lorenzo di Credi 1478–85
Musée du Louvre, Paris

Originally part of the predella commissioned between 1475 and 1478 from del Verrocchio for the oratory built by Bishop Donato de' Medici, it was left unfinished. The panels were eventually dispersed to various locations. This Annunciation panel had been attributed to da Vinci until the 1930s when it was compared to two other panels of the predella that were considered to be by the hand of Lorenzo di Credi, after designs by del Verrocchio. The result was  a re-evaluation of the attribution. Now, the Annunciation panel was also believed to be executed by di Credi, and only inspired by da Vinci's Annunciation, located at the Uffizi in Florence. General opinion is still divided between attribution to da Vinci, di Credi, and a collaborative work between the two. However, this panel reveals more similarities to the style of di Credi than it does to da Vinci. The Louvre attributes it to di Credi.
