Giovanni Stanchi (1608–c. 1673)

An Italian still-life painter from Rome, Stanchi was born into a family of artists. He was one of the leading figures of still-life painting in Rome and was also known as Stanchi Dei Fiori for his detailed and vibrant depictions of flowers. Little is known of his life, but he and his family were prolific artists active in Rome. He had two brothers who were also artists, Niccolò and Angelo, and scholars have found it difficult to distinguish individual hands. However, it is believed that, from a stylistic point of view, the Stanchi works in the Flemish manner can generally be ascribed to Giovanni, the youngest, as they date to the 1640s. It is also likely that Giovanni played a significant role in the shift from Caravaggio's naturalism to the more ornamental and graceful aspects of Baroque art. It has been suggested that he trained under Agostino Verrocchio.
