River Valley Oil on canvas, 30 x 53.5 cm, by Hercules Seghers, c. 1626–30 Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam |
||||||||||
| Seghers presents a broad, mountainous landscape stretches into the distance, with a river winding through the valley below. Sparse trees, a few buildings, and a solitary tower are nestled in the open terrain, while a lone figure walks in the foreground to the left. Two smaller figures can be seen in the distance on the right. The elevated perspective, jagged cliffs, and combination of fine detail with bolder touches recall the Flemish tradition, particularly the influence of Bruegel and those who came after him. Depth is conveyed through carefully placed colour and the balance of light and shadow across the scene. |
