Mountain Landscape with a
Plateau Etching coloured with brush, 10.5 x 13.8 cm, by Hercules Seghers, c. 1625–30 The Metropolitan Museum of Art. New York |

| Seghers depicts a rugged, imaginary mountain landscape, where terraced fields lie enclosed by steep cliffs and jagged rock formations. Printed in coloured inks on pre-tinted paper and painted by hand, it carries a muted, atmospheric quality that dissolves the boundary between print and painting. Seghers approached each impression as a singular work, applying experimental techniques that would later influence Rembrandt. |
