The Mossy Tree Coloured etching, 16.8 x 9.8 cm, by Hercules Seghers, c. 1625–30 Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam |

| A tall, spindly tree draped in moss rises alone against a softly tinted background, its drooping branches traced in delicate, floating lines. The sparse foliage seems almost weightless, suspended before a misty wash of pale blue and grey that gives the scene an otherworldly quiet. Seghers achieved this effect using a lift-ground etching, printed in green pigments on a pink lead-based ground, then hand-coloured with semi-transparent blue and grey washes applied from opposite directions. |
