Castle with Tall Towers Hand-coloured etching, 9.7 x 13.2 cm, by Hercules Seghers, c. 1622–25 Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam |
||||||||||
| This etching was produced using the lift-ground technique, a method that allowed for painterly effects more akin to drawing than to traditional linear etching. The sky is marked with scattered specks caused by foul biting, an imperfection that here adds a sense of texture and atmosphere. Printed in black ink on paper coated with a lead-based bluish-grey ground, the plate was later enhanced with transparent washes of grey in varying shades, along with touches of light brown. The castle, with its tall towers and somewhat irregular composition, appears partly imagined or altered, as was often the case in the artist’s work. The subdued colouring and softened lines lend the scene a still, meditative quality, where reality and imagination intertwine. |
