Concert in a Palace
Oil on copper, 65.3 x 92.4 cm, by Johann Georg Platzer (1704–1761)
Location unknown

This is one of Platzer's cabinet works, a smaller picture format in which he specialised. The composition is said to be an allegory of the Five Senses. Sight is reflected in the intricate details throughout the scene. Hearing is conveyed through the presence of music and singing. Smell and taste are suggested by the inclusion of fruit, food, and wine. Touch is evoked through the rich textures of the fabrics and rug, along with the girl caressing the parrot. In this painting, Platzer demonstrates his remarkable skill across various painting genres, including still life, architecture, portraiture, figure painting, and landscape. Through his use of copper plate, he creates exquisitely fine, enamel-like gradations with a radiant effect. Platzer's signature appears on the dog's collar.
