Horse
Gouache and grey wash, 42 cm (volume), by Muhammad Faqirullah Khan, c. 1740
Bibliothèque nationale de France

Animal studies flourished in the seventeenth century under Emperor Jahangir, and here Muhammad Faqirullah Khan depicts a dun stallion whose coat is tinted red, symbolising the blood of enemies defeated in battle. Europeans travelling in Mughal territories noted that horses were often painted in various colours, a custom said to have begun at Patna and to have become increasingly widespread as far as Delhi, where it became common. At times the decoration took the form of broad stripes with flowers arranged in garland-like bands around the animal’s belly. The miniature is from a volume of 44 folios, containing predominantly Indian works, together with three Persian miniatures.
