John Arthur Lomax (1857–1923)

Born in Manchester, Lomax was a prominent painter known for his genre and domestic subjects. He studied in Stuttgart and at the Munich Academy before returning to England, where he was active mainly in Manchester and London. His work stands out for its warm, human narratives, encapsulated in small, exquisite canvases. His approach bears some similarity to Denby Sadler, particularly in their shared focus on storytelling through genre subjects, but while Sadler worked on a larger scale, Lomax’s compositions were intimate, capturing moments with a unique charm. Much of his subject matter stemmed from everyday situations that highlighted human frailties, painted with a sympathetic and affectionate understanding. He paid attention to the background settings and period costumes, using these elements to add richness to the narrative. As a result, viewers were drawn into his subjects in a personal way. Lomax exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Manchester City Art Gallery, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and the Walker Art Gallery. He was also an Associate Member of the British Royal Academy. He died in St John's Wood, Westminster, where he had lived.
