The Evening Hour
Illustrated by Lizzie Lawson, lithograph by Ernest Rister, published 1887

A quiet evening settles in, the fire burning low as the children's curls glow in its soft light. The room is filled with the gentle sounds of a purring cat and the rhythmic ticking of the clock, creating a peaceful atmosphere. Two girls are absorbed in a book, a boy leans in to listen, and another girl cradles a kitten. Nearby, a second cat curls up with her kittens on the rug, adding to the sense of warmth and serenity. The nurse watches over them, her heart light, yet her thoughts are cast toward the future. She knows that life’s wild ways will not always be as peaceful as this evening, and she silently prays for more smiles than sorrow, more joy than tears in the years to come. And in this moment, there is a quiet wish for all their days to hold such gentle calm. (After a poem by Lizzie Lawson/Robert Ellice Mack.)
