A marginalia figure of a human–animal hybrid, which has been described as a ‘Yoda figure’ because of its large, pointed ears, expressive face, and slightly hunched posture, has attracted attention in recent years. The manuscript, Decretals of Gregory IX, Royal 10 E IV, is a canonical law collection issued under the authority of Pope Gregory IX and compiled for him by Raymond of Peņafort (or Penyafort), a Dominican friar and distinguished jurist. Bernard of Parma compiled the Glossa ordinaria, the standard authoritative commentary used by canon lawyers, in the margins. |
