View of Zuylichem Castle Pen and brush on paper, 25.7 x 20.5 cm, by Frans Nicolaas Marius Eyck van Zuylichem, after 1825 City Castle Museum in Zaltbommel, Gelderland | ||||||||||
| Zuylichem Castle as it likely appeared in the 16th or 17th century: a double residence with stepped gables and two corner turrets, encircled by a broad moat with a bridge leading to a gatehouse at right; a separate tower rises in the distance. An inscription on the reverse reads: 'The house at Zuylichem as it must have appeared in the 15th/16th centuries, before the Waaldijk [dyke] was constructed against it. Based on a 1732 drawing by C. Pronk and surviving floor plans.' In 1818, Frans Nicolaas Marius Eijck acquired the Zuylichem estate, thereafter styling himself Eijck van Zuylichem and publishing several texts on the castle and the village’s past. | ||||||||||
