Frans Nicolaas Marius Eyck van Zuylichem (1806–1876)

Van Zuylichem, a draughtsman, watercolourist, and architect, was born in Utrecht. Already in his youth he had a definite predilection for architecture, devoting himself to its study in his hometown, and he made such progress that he was soon offered the position of architect at Utrecht in 1824. Largely self-taught, his greatest interest was ancient architecture at a time when few cared for or understood it, and he spent years crossing the country to take measurements, make drawings, and describe old buildings. Much of his research was published and is considered of great value. He was mostly active in Maartensdijk, where he had become mayor for twenty years, and in other parts of Utrecht. He died at his country house in Eijckenstein, where he had spent nearly his entire life.
