Four-wheeled carriage: 'voiture coupé solo'
Coloured engraving print, 11 x 19 cm, by A.B. Duhamel, after Defraine, 1787

From the fashion magazine Magasin des Modes Nouvelles, Françaises et Anglaises, this illustration depicts a four-wheeled carriage with an enclosed passenger compartment. The upper section is black, while the lower portion is adorned with green and gold latticework. A small window with curtains ensures privacy. The wheels are green with gold accents, with the rear wheels notably larger than the front ones. The driver’s seat, positioned at the front and elevated above the front axle, features a cushioned black seat and decorative metalwork beneath it. A curved armrest extends from the front, and a small, fringed lampshade is mounted near the driver’s area. The shafts extend forward, designed for horse attachment. Made for the well-to-do, it offers an exquisite blend of luxury and functionality, with intricate detailing and a design that ensures both comfort and elegance.
